On March 8th, in the comprehensive workshop of Xinya Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Xinya Company") in Zhoushan City, a large steel plate with the logos of Xinya Company and Maersk Company was slowly cut open with the start button of the CNC cutting machine. The 14000 TEU "Maersk Halifax Wheel" methanol dual fuel modification project undertaken by the company officially began. This is the world's first container ship methanol dual fuel modification project, marking Zhoushan's strides forward in the "new track" of green ship repair.
The total length of the vessel is 353 meters, with a width of 53.5 meters and a maximum packing capacity of 14000 TEUs. "Compared to traditional heavy oil fuel, using methanol fuel can reduce about 70% of carbon emissions generated during ship navigation and achieve zero sulfide emissions." Wang Yuanbo, the manager of the Quality Management Department of Xinya Company, introduced that the main content of this modification project involves lengthening and segmenting the hull, adding new tank positions, and modifying the main engine with dual fuel, with a modification period of 3 months. The modified Maersk Halifax vessel will become a methanol dual fuel powered vessel, which can use both methanol and diesel fuels; It will also be the first operational ship in the world to use methanol dual fuel after modification.
It is understood that since the signing of the agreement between Xinya Company and Maersk Group on October 18 last year, Xinya Company has actively carried out a series of preparatory work such as design scheme discussion, material and equipment procurement, technical deduction, and segmented prefabrication. The company has also built a 500 ton gantry crane at Dock 3 and has put it into use. Combined with a series of advanced special cutting machines and welding equipment, the production preparation work has been fully refined and improved to ensure the smooth progress of the ship modification project.
